For the past year, the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (HCOM) worked to create a software-centric environment connecting multiple physical classrooms to create a single, unified active learning environment. This experience allows faculty and students to learn from and work with each other, regardless of campus location. This session will walk participants through the process of designing not only an active learning classroom but an active learning environment that extends beyond the physical barriers of a building or a single campus. The catalyst for this technological change was the transformation of the
College’s physical space as HCOM is currently designing a new, innovative medical education facility on the Athens campus. First, the session will overview the current technology state and curricular model of the College, as well as review faculty feedback on future state designs. The Heritage College currently employs a “shared curriculum” in which a team of instructors teaches up to 500 students throughout three campuses. Oftentimes, the instructors are limited by physical space constraints by using the shared model. A critical
requirement of the new learning technology was to create a model that would enhance the shared teaching and learning experience, regardless of originating physical space.
